Why every beauty learner should get into the room with the industry

On 5 October, VTCT Skills announced Beauty Collective Live, a series of events that bring the beauty industry into the classroom. Learners and educators can watch live demonstrations, hear from industry experts and see the latest nail, makeup, lash and brow techniques and trends.

The first venues announced are Gateshead College, Portsmouth College, New College Lanarkshire and Northern Regional College in Coleraine. Special guests include Glitterbels, NouveauHD and Bella Pierre.

There are no Welsh venues on the list yet. But the bigger point applies to every learner, wherever you train.

Why live events matter when you’re learning

Your course teaches you the standard. Live events show you what the industry is doing with that standard right now.

Watching an experienced educator work in front of you is different from watching a video. You see how they set up, how they position the client, how they correct something mid treatment, and how they talk while they work. Those small details are what separate a competent therapist from a confident one.

In my 27 years in this industry, some of the most useful things I’ve learnt came from standing at the side of a demonstration and asking one good question at the end.

How to get the most from an industry event

Go with a question. Before you go, write down one thing you struggle with, such as lash mapping, brow symmetry or nail prep, and ask about it.

Watch the hands, not just the result. The finished look is the easy bit to copy. The technique that got there is what you’re really there to learn.

Talk to the brands. Ask about their education, their courses and what they look for in a professional. It’s an early introduction to people you may work with later.

Take notes the same day. Write down three things you’ll try in your next practical session, before you forget them.

If there isn’t an event near you

Ask your tutor or college whether they’ve been in touch with VTCT Skills about hosting one. The events page is on the VTCT Skills website. Look out for trade shows too. Professional Beauty Spring is at Olympia London on 28 February and 1 March 2027.

Your career starts before you qualify

The habits you build as a learner, staying curious, asking questions and keeping up with the industry, are the habits that keep you booked later on.
